Another exciting part of the Voice of Home Ministries in Nicaragua is the Sewing Classes, which started in the fall of 2011.
Eight ladies from the Las Quimeras area traveled by bus to the Mission House for a 2 hour class once a week for 5 weeks. They were introduced to beginner’s basic skills, including how to thread a needle, pin a pattern and perfect their hand stitching. Over the five weeks of class, the ladies used a combination of hand stitching and machine stitching to complete three projects: a Kleenex pouch, small drawstring bag and a drawstring backpack.
The purpose of the Sewing Classes is multifaceted. As well as teaching women skills to provide material goods for their families, VOH is planning to help market some of the items created in the classes so that the ladies can buy groceries for their households. Another wonderful benefit of the classes is that the women get to spend some quality time with each other for fellowship, sharing prayer concerns and celebrating what God is doing in their lives.
Future classes are being planned for teaching how to sew clothing, as well as other marketable skills, such as crochet, knitting, jewelry making, embroidery, etc. VOH is very blessed to be able to assist these women in providing for their families.
More sewing machines are on the way for use in the classes, which will expand to more days of the week to accommodate women in other church plant areas. We always have a waiting list of women eager to learn skills.
Material needs include: sewing machines, fabric, sewing supplies & accessories, craft supplies and instruction booklets. Some of our visiting High-impact teams bring these items in their luggage. Many of the items are available in León and monetary donations through the VOH website PayPal system is most beneficial to providing these items for the classes.
